New Mexico licenses 'Lactation Care Providers' through the Board of Nursing. Unlike the other licensure states, it accepts several national certifications — not IBCLC alone.

- Enacted as HB 138, with regulations effective 2018-07-30. Codified at NMAC 16.12.11 and administered by the New Mexico Board of Nursing.
- ⚠ The credential is titled 'Lactation Care Provider', not 'lactation consultant'. Lists that describe New Mexico as licensing 'lactation consultants' are using the wrong name for it.
- An applicant must hold an approved national certification as a lactation provider. The Board names several accepting bodies — the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLC), the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (CLC), LEAARC, IACET and NCCA.
- ⚠ This makes New Mexico materially different from Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island, where eligibility runs through IBCLC certification. A New Mexico licence does NOT by itself imply the holder is an IBCLC.
- The Board of Nursing publishes no public lookup for this credential that we could find, unlike its nursing registers.

In New Mexico a licensed Lactation Care Provider has met a state standard, but the licence alone does not tell you which certification they hold — it could be IBCLC, or CLC, or another. If the IBCLC credential specifically matters to you, ask, and check it against the IBLCE registry yourself.
